The first Academic Team at CCHS was organized in 1986 -- the first year of the KAAC
Governor’s Cup competitions in Kentucky -- by Coach Barb Juengling. Donn Manker coached the math teams that year as part of the competition. In 1994, Paulette Farr Perkins became the head coach, and in 1997 Donn Manker became the head coach, and is currently in his 16th year in that position.
1986 was also the year the Northern Kentucky Academic League (NKAL) was organized.
Most high school teams in Northern Kentucky participate in the league, which helps teams prepare to compete in the Governor’s Cup competitions in January, February, and March.
Campbell County’s teams have been among the top teams in Northern Kentucky since its inception. As schools in the county developed their own teams, students ultimately came together in high school academic competitions, forming enriching rivalries and lasting memories.
The Campbell County High School Academic Team is active in three types of academic competitions:

NKAL
The Northern Kentucky Academic League seeks to recognize and promote academic excellence through competition. The league designs, implements, and regulates academic competitions for its member schools.
The Northern Kentucky Academic League was founded in 1986 by a group of Academic Team coaches who wanted to recognize and promote academic excellence through competition. The league includes elementary, middle, and high school divisions.
Students participate in weekly matches where they compete in "Quick Recall" which is comparable to "Quiz Bowl" or the television series Jeopardy!
Students participate in tournaments where they compete in Quick Recall, Future Problem Solving and Written Assessments (tests on subject areas)
KAAC Governor’s Cup
Mission Statement: “To Enrich the Lives of Kentucky Students Though Academic Competition.”
Governor’s Cup was founded in 1986 as a way to promote, reward and recognize outstanding academic achievement. Since then, over a quarter of a million students have taken part in the event.
Governor’s Cup has become the state’s premier academic event, involving over 20,000 students, nearly 1,200 schools, and thousands of coaches, administrators, parents and community leaders who see the rewards gained from encouraging academic performance through properly structured and professionally administered academic competition.
Governor’s Cup consists of eight events:
? Five Written Assessment Examinations–in Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Language
Arts and Arts/Humanities
? Composition–On-Demand Writing
? Quick Recall
? Future Problem Solving–an award-winning creative thinking competition
In the Elementary (Grade 5 and below) division, students take part in a District and Regional competition. The Middle Grades (6-8) and High School (9-12) divisions include a District, Regional and State competition.
NAQT
About NAQT
National Academic Quiz Tournaments organizes the premier high school and college quiz bowl championships in North America. NAQT was founded in 1996 by former players and coaches from across the country.
NAQT was founded in 1996 by a group of former players. Those competitors —— including several national champions — are now college professors, high school teachers, lawyers, engineers, software developers, physicians, and research scientists who make time to promote and improve the fast-paced question-and-answer game that was an important part of their lives. They are motivated by the chance to provide the next generation of students with more and better opportunities for competition than they themselves had.
NAQT provides a standardized, nationwide competition format that is open to all middle schools, high schools, home school collectives, community colleges, and colleges. In addition to its national championships, NAQT provides questions to invitational tournaments and league championships throughout the year as well as television shows and online games.
NAQT's writers and editors consistently provide accurate, original, and interesting questions on academic subjects and general knowledge. The quality of those questions draws teams from across the nation and around the world to compete at our annual championships. We are proud to promote an activity that glorifies learning, expands horizons, and rewards teamwork.
NAQT operates out of the Twin Cities and Kansas City, but its members mentor coaches, host tournaments, volunteer their services, and share their expertise across the United States.
